Scope and Content Note

The Laboratory Notebooks Series holds the entirety of Sabin's laboratory work during his time at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation and the University of Cincinnati, 1935 to 1969, including his service to the United States during World War II. As this series contains confidential patient information, the whole series is restricted . The series is divided alphabetically into eight sub-series: Cancer, Dengue, ECHO-viruses, Encephalitis, General Viruses, Miscellaneous, Poliomyelitis, and Toxoplasmosis. Each sub-series is arranged chronologically and then alphabetically within any given year.

No original order existed when these files arrived for processing, but they quickly suggested their own order - one divided by disease. Of the eight, only two do not pertain to specific diseases. In the case of "General Viruses," several diseases have been grouped together because there were too few files to make a larger sub-series. "General Viruses" includes such diseases as small pox, meningitis, and multiple sclerosis, among several others. In the "Miscellaneous" sub-series can be found such things as storage information for test materials, unidentified white blood counts, and other such items, which did not belong with any specific disease under investigation.

In some instances, related correspondence, publications, or other like materials are included with the laboratory notebooks. Abbreviated and bracketed notations have been made in the inventory to indicate where such items can be found. Please note these and other abbreviations:
